Saints
Early 1970's Archie Manning
Archie wore the beautiful leather padded Macgregor model "MH-100" helmet (as pictured here) during his entire college career at Mississippi and also
during his early years with the Saints. In the late 1970s while still with the Saints he switched to a Riddell helmet which he wore for the remainder of his
professional career including his years with the Oilers and Vikings. This correct Saints replica includes the same rare Dungard jaw pads he upgraded to
in place of the standard Macgregor type (In addition to its more familiar facemask line, Dungard also manufactured a line of helmet accessories including
jaw pads, crown pads, chinstraps and front sweatbands). The pictured Dungard facemask, which was one of the many different types he wore with the
Macgregor helmet, is considered to be one of the rarest Dungard facemask that was produced by the company. Only a few other pros wore this mask
including the Brown's Brian Sipe and Paul Warfield (late in his career). In college Archie primarily wore the Schutt model "OPO" facemask that is
pictured here attached to a 1968 game worn Mississippi helmet. In the pros, in what must be a record for any football player, Archie wore more than ten
different styles (not counting color changes) of facemasks! Perhaps Ole Archie was just superstitious and felt that he would keep switching masks until
the Saints had a winning season.
