LSU - 1940's
(Authentic Reproduction)

This strikingly handsome Helmet Hut authentic reproduction of LSU's late 1940s through early 1950s style football helmet has recently found a permanent home prominently displayed in Coach Saban's football office. Helmet Hut felt both privileged and honored to work with the team on a special helmet project during the 2003 season (watch Helmet Hut for the upcoming exclusive story and photographs).

LSU first started wearing this now famous Riddell model "RT" plastic shell suspension helmet shortly after the end of WW ll when previous restrictions that limited the use of plastic to the war effort were lifted. This helmet's tasteful old gold and purple color scheme was a longtime LSU tradition and preceded the yellow gold shell, 3" player numerals and purple and white striping featured on the late 1950s "Billy Cannon" era style helmets. This is the same style helmet worn by LSU's legendary quarterback Y. A. Tittle who in 1946 led one of their greatest teams (9-1-1) to the Cotton Bowl where they tied Arkansas in a scoreless game played in frigid conditions. This is also the same style helmet that was worn by the 1949 team (8-3-0) who lost to Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl.

The rich history of LSU football is truly reflected by the evolution of their distinctive helmet styles. Helmet Hut remains truly honored to have worked directly with this prestigious school helping them to recreate part of that special history.
