As a superb athlete in Port
Chester, N.Y., Paul Costa had scholarship offers in track, basketball, and
football. After a year at Northeastern Oklahoma JC, he decided to pursue
an education at the University Of Notre Dame. When Ara Parseghian arrived as
the head coach in 1964, Costa had already been drafted by the Chiefs as a
"future" the season before and he was switched from a 6'5" halfback to end on
that season's surprise team. He wound up signing with the Bills and averaged
over twenty yards per reception as a tight end in his rookie season. He made
the Pro Bowl that year, in '65, and again in 1966. He caught 102 passes for
699 yards, and a solid 16.7 yards per reception average before being moved to
offensive tackle for the final four years of his career. He retired in 1973
but was enticed to return to the gridiron with the Birmingham Americans of the
new WFL in '74 and came back for another season with the Vulcans in the
short-lived 1975 season. Always an intelligent player and individual, Costa
earned a Masters Degree and PhD from the California Graduate School Of
Theology and has served the Church as a minister, author (End Time Warriors
co-authored with John P. Kelly), and popular speaker for many years.
