Bruhn,
who had settled on a white helmet shell for his squad, added two-inch
red identifying player numerals to each side of the helmet. The “touch”
that added distinction to the Badger headgear and would make it
immediately identifiable, was the cardinal “W” logo on both the front
and rear. On the field there was improvement to 6-3 going with a
predominantly sophomore squad. Sid Williams began the season at
quarterback but moved to running back as sophomore Dale Hackbart, a
strong runner, took over as the signal caller. Halfback Danny Lewis was
again the bell cow, finishing behind Alan Ameche as the Badgers’ career
rush leader and he then moved to the NFL, spending all but the final two
years of his nine-year career with the Lions. Notre Dame transfer Edward
Robert “Bob” Zeman was effective at fullback and DB while end Dave
Kocourek formed a good line tandem with guard and linebacker Dan
Lanphear.
