Building on the strong finish of ’62, the Pack added an attractive four-inch
scarlet block letter “S” to each side of their white helmet with the scarlet
one-inch center stripe that they had worn since the 1958 season. The Pack
tied for the ACC title posting an 8-3 record that included a 16-12 Liberty
Bowl loss to Ole Miss. All ACC performances were abundant with QB Jim Rossi
and end Don Montgomery topping the list and Montgomery being named as an All
American. All Conference guard Bill Sullivan teamed with tackle Bert Wilder
who returned from the military to earn All ACC notice and then played with
the Jets from 1964-’67. The backfield was strong with Tony Koszarsky and
two-way performer Joe Scarpati who went on to an underrated career as a DB
with the Eagles from ’64 through 1969 and completed his NFL stay with a year
at New Orleans. The team’s performance won Edwards the ACC Co-Coach Of The
Year Award.
