These Wes Fesler coached
teams are best remembered for the accomplishments of Winona, MN native, Paul
Giel. Giel was twice named Big Ten MVP. In 1953, the two-time All-American was
named the Associated Press Back of the Year and the UPI Player of the Year. He
finished second to Notre Dame’s Johnny Lattner in the second-closest Heisman
Trophy voting in history. Also a baseball All-American at U of M, he returned
to his alma mater following his professional career to serve as director of
athletics. His #10 jersey was officially retired on Sept. 24, 1991.
