Repeating their 6-5 mark of '75, the Gophers were again led by senior and two-time Academic All Big Ten pick QB Dungy. He closed out his career as the number-four all-time total yardage man in Big Ten history while setting the Gophers’ total yardage and passing yardage records as well as six other offensive marks. As a very successful, recently retired NFL head coach, first with the Bucs and then with the Colts as a Super Bowl victor, many forget that he played DB and occasionally served as a back-up QB with the Steelers and 'Niners. Dungy’s six INT’s in 1978 ranked second in the AFC. Frosh RB Ken Kitzmann led the running game with 696 yards but the team was not consistent enough to get to a bowl game, even with All Conference play from safety George Adzick. The Gophers maintained the “gold” look but the distinctive “M” logo was made larger for the ’76 season.
