1974 featured the same
schedule as '73 but with different results as the Spartans finished at a fine
7-3-1 with an upset win over number-one ranked Ohio State that shocked the
nation. All Conference FB Levi Jackson led the rushers with 942 yards and QB
Baggett recovered fully from his '73 injury to run for another 748. A slight
change to the helmet which was now adorned with a Kelly green mask instead of
the standard gray, had made the '74 uniforms even nicer looking and that look
was carried into 1975. With things looking up '75 began with a loss to Ohio
State but the Spartans rebounded and finished at 7-4 with their usually tough
schedule, adding a 10-3 win over Notre Dame. TE Mike Cobb was an All Big Ten
performer and FB Levi Jackson repeated his heroics of '74 with 1063 yards on
the ground. WB Kirk Gibson caught nine balls but was perhaps a slightly better
baseball player as history proved. TE Larry Bethea was moved to DT effectively
and played well with All Conference DE Otto Smith. With the two straight
seven-win seasons, it appeared that Michigan State football was again well
established.
