With the
introduction of former Oklahoma State head coach Jimmy Johnson as the new
Hurricane mentor, there was also an introduction of a white face mask and
"The U" as Miami is often referred to, has been wearing the same styled
headgear since. Johnson's teams became the terror of collegiate football
and his seasonal records of 8-5, 10-2, 11-1, 12-0, and 11-1 earned him the
National Championship in 1987, laid the foundation for two others ('89 and
'91) when Dennis Erickson took over in 1989, and earned Johnson the
Cowboys head coaching job.
