In January of 1979 Donnie Duncan
became ISU's new head coach and AD. Barry Switzer's Assistant Head Coach at
Oklahoma, he maintained Bruce's effective I-Formation but fell to 3-8. DE
Kenny Neil and Safety Mike Schwartz were the cornerstones of the defense and
Schwartz was All Conference, setting an ISU career record for DB tackles with
319. QB Terry Rubley passed for 1867 yards despite a lack of team offense.
Duncan put his mark on the program with a new helmet design, introducing a
Cardinal colored shell and on each side, placing a Sunflower gold,
horizontally oriented custom lettered "ISU" with a star directly above the
"I".
