Perhaps dismayed by the mistake-ridden debacle against Wichita State, and despite the close but important win over Miami, the “100 Year” decal was removed after the season’s second game and replaced by a garnet “STATE” logo for the remainder of the season.

QB Bill Cappleman had a good year with 2467 yards and fourteen touchdowns through the air, but without Sellers, not quite as good as his junior year had been. Tommy Bailey again was the primary rush weapon, finishing the season with 665 yards. Always basing his teams on rock-ribbed defense, Peterson was dismayed that his 'Noles gave up a total of 182 points, and uncharacteristically, ninety-one was the yield in the last three games! Despite his lingering frustration with the lack of "basics" his team was subjected to, the frosh team looked good and included State's first African-American players.
