  Ward added a bevy of
T-Formation plays and de-emphasized his Single Wing to accommodate the talents
of soph QB Boyd Dowler. With John "The Beast" Bayuk blocking, running, and
making the Sports Illustrated All American team and HB Bob Stransky plunging
for 548 yards, Ward's offensive acumen peaked. Frank Clarke's receiving
ability was fully exploited and he was able to go to the Browns for three
years before becoming one of the Dallas Cowboys' early stars, playing through
1967. HB Eddie Dove was a two-way star and Ward had the added bonus of
Dowler's 42.1 punting average. The team roared to a 7-2-1 record, losing only
to the Sooners in-conference, and then defeated Clemson in the Orange Bowl
27-21. In addition to the offensive changes, Coach Ward also altered the
helmet, stripping off the black center stripe and having his Buffs play in
  plain silver shells.
