Crowder had not only
overcome the stigma and limitations of scandal and probation, but had brought
Colorado to the elite of the Big Eight Conference with a 9-2 season that
included a Bluebonnet Bowl win over Miami in a 31-21 game that found soph QB
Bob Anderson the MVP. FB Wilmer Cooks and HB William Harris who played three
years with three NFL teams were fine rushers but young Anderson led the team
with 625 yards and 1515 total yards. Much of the rushing credit could go to
All Conference center Mike Montler. The defense picked up the pace too, led by
Dick Anderson, Bob's older brother. The All American safety was the school's
career tackle and interception leader, and feared by receivers to the tune of
his later election to the College Football Hall Of Fame. Anderson was a key to
the Dolphins Super Bowl defenses and a three-time Pro Bowl performer in his
pro career that spanned 1968 through '77. DT Frank Bosch played well enough to
be drafted by the Redskins and play a few seasons for them. A slight change
was made to the helmet design from '66, with the thin rounded "Charger" style
numbers being replaced by black three-inch full block style numerals on the
sides of the helmet.
