A slight change to the helmet decal found a white border around the navy blue
“CAL” and also around the athletic gold bear claw logo. Kapp's critics pointed
to '84's 2-9 record and said that this was the true reflection of his coaching
abilities. Slow-footed but rifle-armed QB Gilbert completed a sterling career at
Cal and while never a full-time NFL starter, became the answer to a trivia
question playing for Seattle, Buffalo, and San Diego as he became the first
player in league history to be a member of five consecutive Super Bowl teams,
four with the Bills and one with San Diego. Big tackle Doug Riesenberg was
disappointing and the defense suffered although soph LB Hardy Nickerson was an
impact player, setting a new school tackle record with 141, and the secondary
played well.
