The Bears wore the same helmet design as the previous season but the “100” that
signified the centennial anniversary of college football at the University was
removed. Cal fans' ardor cooled a bit as the promise of Kapp's first year in '82
only produced a 5-5-1 mark in '83 although he did again defeat rival Stanford.
QB Gale Gilbert once more lit up the skies with 2769 passing yards but the
rushing attack was almost non-existent producing but 55.2 yards per game. TE
Dave Lewis became the Lions first draft pick but only lasted until the end of
'86, completing his NFL career in 1987 with the Dolphins. Tackle Doug Riesenberg
and All American LB Ron Rivera led a defense that caused forty-one turnovers.
Rivera, whose tackles-for-loss mark still stands as a Cal record, played with
the Chicago Bears from '84 through '92, was the Bears’ defensive coordinator in
their Super Bowl season under head coach Lovie Smith, presently is on staff with
the Chargers, and remains a sought after head coaching candidate.
